Hi and welcome back to Tuesday's Tips in Online Marketing. I'm Li Evans of Search Marketing Gurus. I'm back today with three tips in social media marketing and how companies can be social, in social media. A lot of companies step into the social media space with a lot of expectations that they just put up a Facebook page or have a Twitter account and that they are automatically going to be successful in this space. But unfortunately that's not how it works. You actually need to be social in social media. So I've come up with three tips that companies can use to put into their strategies to help them be a little more social in social media. So lets take a look at the first tip.
It Isn't About You, So Leave Your Ego Behind
The first tip is "Be Real & Drop the Ego". I wrote a column for Search Engine Watch, so you can go out to SearchEngineWatch.com and search for "Leave the Ego at the Door". This column is all about how in the social media space it's not about you, your product, your services or your brand. It's about how the community shares its experiences and what they think is important and of value about your brand. So that's why you need to drop the ego at the door, and then you also need to be real.
You need to be up front and transparent about who you are and why you're here and why you are interacting with them. So you have to be able to have a thick skin and be prepared to actually get a little bit of anger or a little bit backlash in the beginning, but if you are real, upfront and you drop your ego at the door and that you aren't a know it all, you will get a lot of reward in the end.
Be Kind & Share, Just Don't Expect the Same in Return
So lets take a look at tip number 2. Tip number 2 is "Share Without Expectation". So what I mean by this is, say you have a blogger program going on where its blogger outreach and you are sending samples to different bloggers to try of your product. Do not expect that you will get links right away. Do not expect anything, just say "here we would just like your feedback about what you think about this product." And its the same if you write something about someone, don't expect a link back right away. Or if you put something out there don't expect to get things back right away. Its about sharing, sharing without expectation.
How Will You Know Unless You Ask & Engage Your Audience?
So our third and final tip for today is "Engage Others", this means, ask your audience questions. Ask them about what they feel about your new product, or this new item on your menu, or "What do you think about this new movie coming out", "if we send you a little clip, what do you think about the trailer?" These types of things help to engage your audience. Ask them to vote in a poll. Ask them to leave comments on blog posts. You will be surprised about the feedback that you get and this actually gets them use to engaging with you.
