Last week's Online Marketing Tips Video covered 5 tips for businesses in the Travel, Tourism & Hospitality Industry, and one of those tips included utilizing Social Media Sites. Today I wanted to delve a bit deeper into the types of Social Media Sites that are available.
Social Media is a big area of Online Marketing, so the next three Tuesday's Tips Videos are going to cover the different types of Social Media out there. This week we're going to cover 3 types of Social Media: Social News, Social Sharing and Social Networking.
First up is Social News. Just what is social news? These are sites that allow users to submit articles, blog posts, videos, podcasts, or photos for the community to vote "up" or "down" on. The more positive votes a submission recieves the more likely the submission will make it to the community's popular page. Along with the submissions, these sites allow users to comment on the submissions, as well as vote on those comments. Usually the sites are segregated into categories and monitor for duplicate submissions.
Social News sites are important to online marketing because this is where the "buzz" can start about a product, a service or something viral that has been launched. A word of caution though, over using, or even trying to game these types of sites in any way can backfire on a marketing campaign. The best approach is one of honesty and transparency when dealing with Social News Sites.
Next up is Social Sharing. Now you are probably asking, just what am I referring to when I say social sharing. Well, these are social sites like Flickr, Picassa, YouTube, Metacafe or Revver that allow you to share your multimedia with your friends or a community. These are great communities to become involved with because they have very passionate and dedicated members. What's even more important, is this is another way to speak to a community without having to rely on a search engine for traffic.
Each of these sites have ways to speak to specific groups that form within the community. Sharing your photos or videos with them can help you target a very niche and very targeted audience. These are great ways to share photos of your business, your events or even videos of how to your your products or a tour of your facilities. Be creative, only your imagination limits you when it comes to social sharing!
Lastly for this weeks Tuesday's Tips in online marketing is Social Networking. By now you've all heard of MySpace, and you've likely heard of Facebook. These types of sites are another great place to find groups that are interested in the same types of information you might be wanting to share. Movie production companies set up MySpace pages to promote an upcoming movie, Restaurants open Facebook pages with OpenTable applications so users can make reservations. There's a lot of ways to use Social Networking to promote your business in an online world, and its a great way to talk to a targeted audience.
